The fantastical realm of gaming has always been a sanctuary for escapists. From the rolling hills of Tamriel to the war-torn landscapes of Azeroth, these virtual worlds have provided players with countless hours of immersion. The recent entry into this expanse is the much-anticipated ‘Immortals of Aveum’, a game that promises to bring together first-person shooter elements with the intoxicating allure of magic. But does it succeed? Let’s find out.
The first point of note is our protagonist, Jak, an average Joe, or perhaps too average. When not wielding his magically-infused gun-arm (which by the way, would be quite a task to keep up for prolonged hours as per our initial challenge), Jak seems rather forgettable, blending seamlessly into the tapestry of other generic video game protagonists.
However, beneath the surface-level qualms lies a genuine attempt to craft a captivating adventure. The world of Aveum is vast and varied, offering players picturesque locales ranging from alpine terrains to luminous purple-tinged dungeons. There’s a profound sense of wonder and grandiosity, tinged occasionally with the random, like libraries covered in molten metal excreted by guardians. It’s eccentricities like these that make you appreciate the game’s willingness to deviate from the norm.
One would imagine that combining a first-person shooter with magic would make for a riveting gameplay experience. To Aveum’s credit, it does try. The magic-blasting combat, inspired by classics like ‘Doom’ and ‘Wolfenstein’, is initially exhilarating. With the different ‘flavours’ of magic – red, green, and the oft-preferred blue – the combat feels dynamic. However, its repetitiveness eventually catches up, making encounters feel more tedious than thrilling.
The game’s narrative seems to teeter on the precipice of potential greatness but never fully commits. While there are elements of socio-political commentary on class and environmentalism, these themes aren’t deeply explored. Moreover, much of the compelling story happens off-screen, leaving players yearning for more depth and involvement.
This is not to say that Immortals of Aveum is without its merits. Its world-building is commendable, and there are moments, both intentional and accidental, that are truly entertaining. Gina Torres lends credibility to the Immortals, and the gameplay mechanics, when not overdone, are genuinely innovative. But it’s the game’s tonal inconsistency that ultimately feels jarring. It’s as if it’s caught in a tug-of-war between wanting to be a lighthearted fantasy romp and a profound epic saga.
In conclusion, ‘Immortals of Aveum’ is a mixed bag. While it offers a tantalising glimpse into a magical world brimming with potential, it falters in execution. One can only hope that if there’s a sequel or spin-off, it capitalizes on the strengths and addresses the shortcomings, giving fans the magical experience they crave. Until then, one might find themselves occasionally venturing into Aveum but perhaps not staying for too long.
