Free to play (F2P) refers to a business model for online games in which the game designers do not charge the user or player in order to join the game. Instead, they hope to bring in revenue from advertisements or in-game sales, such as payment for upgrades, special abilities, special items, and expansion packs.

What does Free-to-play mean?
Free-to-play, also known as F2P or FtP, refers to a type of video game that does not cost anything to play. The users can play these F2P games on their computers, smartphones, tablets, or consoles. Players of these games are given access to join a major part of their content without paying or requiring payment for continued play.
How does Free-to-play game developers make money?
Although the title says free, players who show more interest in the game and want to play it with all the features will end up paying for the extras. Here, the game designers hope that advertising or in-game sales, such as paying for upgrades, special abilities, special items, and expansion packs, will bring them revenue. Free-to-play differs from traditional commercial software, where payment is required before the game can be used. However, they cannot be considered free games, also known as freeware, where their usage is completely free of any cost. The free-to-play model of computer games has a cost-free start, but in order to fully exploit the game, some investment is required.
The origin of Free-to-play
Free games have become increasingly popular in recent years. The free-to-play model has launched much of the economic innovation aimed at the video game market. The free-to-play model originated in the late 1990s and early 2000s. In 1997, Matt Mihaly created the first known business model of exchanging virtual items for money in an online game, which started it all. In 1999, Nexon launched QuizQuiz, which realized the free-to-play model for the first time.
Categories of Free-to-play games
There are several kinds of Free-to-play games, but the most common is based on the freemium software model. Freemium games, such as Star Wars: The Old Republic, Apex Legends, Fortnite Battle Royale, and the majority of the MOBA games, allow players to download and play your game at no cost while offering optional in-app purchases to access additional content. Successful freemium games provide a great experience for both paying and non-paying players and are actively maintained in order to sustain engagement. Another option is shareware games, which can be freely downloaded and, with certain restrictions, used for free. In the free mode, shareware programs work only for a trial period, or you can use only some of their features. Once you have paid, you can use the game without restrictions.
