Project Zomboid is a post-apocalyptic zombie survival game, where the player controls a survivor in a small town, surrounded by a horde of zombies. Electricity and water services will eventually fail and the player must forage and gather food, weapons, and other items, while when possible, avoid visual contact with zombies who are also attracted by sound and smell. A single scratch or a even worse, a bite may be the cause of an infection resulting in zombification and ultimately death.
In addition to zombies, hunger and dehydration are also a concern, especially when electricity fails, the lack refrigeration will eventually rot non-preservable food, such as meat and vegetables. Although entirely optional, survival may include designating a temporary or permanent safe house, of which its doors and windows may be barricaded. Later versions of the game support wilderness survival features such as farming and fishing.
Character development is repetition based. The more the character uses a specific skill (e.g. carpentry, cooking), it will gradually increase until reaching a certain level. When the skill level cap is reached, the skill must be activated with skill points (obtained by experience via skill-based activities or killing zombies) before the character can progress to the next skill level. Skill books per skill level (i.e. intermediate, advanced, expert, master) may optionally be read to provide a multiplier bonus when developing skills.
Several game modes are available for play, including a sandbox mode with customizable world and zombie parameters. Mods are also officially supported.
